- Our Story | Dienge
Explore the journey of Dienge, from its inception in 2002 by Dhammika Gunasekera to becoming a purveyor of unique handcrafted silverware, fine art, gemstones, and jewellery. OUR STORY WHO WE ARE We are situated in the heart of Colombo, Sri Lanka and are purveyors of handcrafted silverware, fine art, gemstones and jewellery. We are known for our eclectic collection of hallmarked silverware frequently purchased by our clients as gifts for special occasions both corporate as well as personal. Our products are never mass produced and most of our collection consists of unique designs and that too not necessarily of Sri Lankan heritage. We are inspired by exquisite designs of the past along with our own imagination and arrive at designs unique and never infringing on others' copyright. HOW IT STARTED Dhammika Gunasekera founded Dienge in 2002 and is its owner. He is a collector of fine art, carpets, silverware and antique furniture. Inspired by the world famous silverware of Buccelatti and Tiffany & Co., Dhammika visited silver artisans' workshops in Sri Lanka in 2001. Although he was enthralled by the sheer quality of their products, he realised that the range of products were limited with minor evolution of design. Subsequently, he decided to help the artisans' business by establishing an organisation that buys and sells custom-made artefacts based on his own preferences. His innovative designs include sterling silver ornaments in the form of conch shells (Valampuri ), pots of prosperity (Punkalasa ) and archways. THE ARTISANS AND THEIR CRAFTMANSHIP Sri Lanka has a rich tradition of exquisite metal work including of silver and gold from over a thousand years ago. We deal with two master craftsmen who are direct descendants of our last Sri Lankan kings' personal silversmith/jewellers. Our silver products are hand-crafted using repousse, embossing and filigree techniques by the best-known artisans in the industry. THE ARTIST In 2016, our owner Dhammika Gunasekera discovered his hidden talent to draw art that harmonises colours and shapes, influenced by the writings and theories of Kandinsky and of the art movements of purism and cubism; although visually his art is very different from the artists and art movements which inspire him. Dhammika's drawings are mainly done on cotton watercolour paper with coloured pencils of archival, lightfast quality to ensure art of lasting quality. THE QUALITY We ensure the quality of the material used is high by hallmarking all products as sterling silver by the National Gem & Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka. Within one year of inception, we were proud to be the recipient of the bronze award for the Assaying and Hallmarking category of Achiever Awards 2003 awarded by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka. THE CLIENTS Today, our sterling silver products are in collections of Royalty, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Diplomats and Military Chiefs of many nations in Asia, Europe, Africa and the USA. The National Business Excellence Awards of the National Chamber of Commerce and the 5S awards of the JASTECA are two instances where the trophies were designed and commissioned by us. The current President's medallion of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka was also designed and commissioned by Dienge.

Our Leadership Dhammika Gunasekera Owner Dhammika Gunasekera founded Dienge in 2002 and is its owner. He is a collector of fine art, carpets, silverware and antique furniture. Being a senior committee member of the Gemmological Society of Royal College, Colombo, Dhammika also developed a passion to collect and broaden his knowledge about gemstones. Thus, when he established Dienge, he began investing in gemstones both precious and semi-precious. These include alexandrites, sapphires, rubies and amethysts. Dhammika greatly values generosity and helps a large number of people and institutions financially. For example, he has given donations to the Sri Lanka Cancer Society, sponsored the Devapathiraja College (a school founded by his grandfather Sir Ernest De Silva) Rugby team in Rathgama, a rural area in Sri Lanka and met university tuition fees of students. Before founding this organisation, Dhammika was a partner at Messrs. U. N. Gunasekera, a construction firm in Sri Lanka established by his father. The first two five-star hotels in Sri Lanka, namely, Lanka Oberoi (Cinnamon Grand) and Ceylon Inter-Continental (Kingsbury) were built by this company. Dhammika graduated from Imperial College London in 1989 with first class honours in civil engineering (BEng). Broadening his horizons to the field of accountancy, he became a passed finalist of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka in 1986. Furthermore, he topped his batch in the Bachelor of Science degree that he completed at University of Colombo in 1984. Dhammika was the head prefect of Royal College, Colombo in 1980. Tahiru Gunasekera Analyst Tahiru Gunasekera, the Analyst at Dienge, is the son of the owner. His enthusiasm to work at Dienge stems from his strong perseverance to promote our business online through cost-effective techniques. This includes launching the current website of Dienge and embracing social media to provide our clients the option to view selected products before visiting our store in Colombo. Additionally, he is involved in overseeing the tasks carried out by the other employees at Dienge and analysing the possibilities of enhancing our firm. Tahiru graduated from Imperial College London in 2021 with first class honours in civil engineering (MEng).

I enjoy dealing with Dhammika, as I find him to be a gentleman in the true sense of the word, whose integrity and honesty are of the highest quality. I wish him continued success.” Sunethra Bandaranaike “I have known Dhammika since grade school. His remarkable transformation from a Civil Engineer to Accountant to Business Owner to Art Lover to Art Producer is a journey that is now captured & encapsulated in his fabulous artistic creations. I am also the proud owner of several pieces of his art work, prominently displayed in two generations of household in the San Francisco Bay Area. I continue to marvel at the evolving artistic genes of Dhammika and eagerly await the next transformative chapter from this creative genius.” Dr. Siri Weerasooriya “Dhammika is an artist blessed with a unique flair. A recent convert to drawing, he has developed a style and technique that is amazingly colourful, vibrant and alive. I enjoy studying his beautiful creations at length, a form of meditation as I sink into the abstract forms, the eclectic colour schemes, and the life that flows through each drawing. This a new an important talent that has just begun to be noticed. I am intent on collecting as many of my friend’s creations as I can – they bring joy to this uncertain world. Dienge is the repository of some of the finest traditional silverware available in Sri Lanka. Dhammika has sought out and secured the services of artisanal silversmiths who have been engaged in their craft for generations. Two of his craftsmen trace their lineage back to the Kandyan Kings of the 18th century. These artefacts are examples of timeless skills, ancient designs and by supporting them you too can keep a traditional art-form alive. Don’t think for a moment that you can only find old designs. The designers at Dienge will work with their artisans to curate objects that are unique to you. Own a small piece of history and help keep a traditional craftsman doing what he loves and what his family has been engaged for hundreds of years." Suren Ratwatte “My family and I have been clients of Dienge since 2005, and much admire their jewellery, traditional silverware and artistic pieces. Dhammika's art is truly unique in style. We are delighted to have purchased a few of his beautiful works and other precious items from Dienge for our home. We most appreciate the quality and workmanship of these pieces, the authenticity of their design, and the care and attention to detail that is provided throughout their process. We wish Dienge and Dhammika continued success. ” Sajotha Karunaratne “I first found out about Dhammika’s art when I was at a meeting at his office. I was intrigued by all the geometry I could see in the drawings a few feet behind his chair and of course had a lot of questions on how he got the shapes and sizes to be uniform and how he came up with the idea for an art. The three types of art he has, pencil, marker and coloured are all unique. The multidimensional nature of the coloured art is so different from the flowing designs of the single colour marker drawings and face centered pencil drawings with closed shapes. However, each of these is a masterpiece with printer like precision and unending variety. At the least, Dhammika’s art is thought-provoking and to an imaginative person, is the start of a beautiful journey through the realms of hidden dimensions.” Santhani Weerawarana
