Handcrafted with meticulous detail, this product made of teak wood and sterling silver presents a replica of the Makara Torana, also known as the Dragon's Arch, a majestic architectural feature deeply rooted in Sri Lankan tradition and symbolism.
Inspired by ancient mythology, the Makara Torana serves as a symbol of protection and auspiciousness, often found at the entrances of temples. Its central arch is adorned with intricate filigree work depicting three makaras, each embodying various attributes: the trunk of an elephant for dexterity, the paws of a lion for strength, the ears of a boar for acute hearing, the body of a fish for movement, the teeth of a crocodile for demanding respect, the eyes of a monkey for vision, and the tail of a bird for splendid beauty.
The central arch is flanked by elaborately decorated side panels, featuring majestic lions at their base, adding to the grandeur and spiritual significance. At the foot of the staircase lies a Sandakada Pahana, or Moonstone, symbolising the cycle of Samsara in Buddhism. Two Naga guardstones, depicting powerful serpent guardians, symbolise protection over the sacred space they guard.
The Makara Torana stands as a gateway between the earthly and the divine, inviting worshippers and visitors with humility and respect. Its timeless beauty and profound symbolism make it an integral part of Sri Lanka's rich cultural and architectural heritage.
